Video: Box Rumba First Position

This is an instruction video for Box Rumba First Position. It is the second video in the Box Rumba Beginners Series. The first video is the Box Rumba Basic Step.
The first position step is crafted after the first of the 5 Basic Foot Positions. This step is found in all dances, however, it is used as a feature in Latin, especially Box Rumba. It is more of a functional step than anything else but when done well it can look very effective. This step introduces ‘mark time’ - keeping the rhythm of the dance in one place.
You will find that the first steps of the Box Rumba introduce the fundamentals of all dance - basic step elements, basic footwork, basic Lead/Follow and floor-craft. So, learning the Box Rumba will definitely help you to learn every other dance. The simple step elements are also perfect for introducing Cuban Motion.
The contents of the video:
- basic demonstration
- basic school figure male/female
- basic instruction
- basic Lead and Follow together
Remember to warm up first before any exercise. You can use what you have learnt in the Bossa Nova Beginners Series - or any other gentle exercise that will warm your body and provide oxygen to your muscles. When practising remember your Posture for Dance Position. It is a good idea to always practice with your arms in Dance Position even if you are not dancing with a partner. This will help you build strength for your frame, will lift your diaphragm and will help you with your balance. It is good to watch both male and female instructional parts of the video because it will re-enforce the information and you will get to see what your partner needs to do. See if you can practise the First Position step with the Basic Box step to music before the next video.
Next week I will post the next step in this series - the Second Position. This is a beautiful step that will emphasise the Rumba style.
NOTE: These videos are a work in progress. I want to create the best videos possible for your tuition so I am experimenting with different presentation ideas and techniques - so you might notice the videos changing and progressing. Feel free to make suggestions or ask questions about any material that is unclear.
I so hope you like this useful little step!
